Learn the Basics

New to burners

If you’re new to burners or Burning Man culture, welcome.

This is a decentralized network of communities shaped by shared values, participation, and connection. There’s no single way to be part of it, and no single place where it all happens.

What is this?

Burning Man started as a temporary city built in the Nevada desert, centered around art, self-expression, and community.

What you’re seeing here is how that culture shows up locally, through communities, events, and relationships that exist year-round.

The Ten Principles

Many people in burner communities orient around a set of shared values known as the Ten Principles.

The Eleventh Principle

The Ten Principles are a foundation for Burner culture.

Over time, many in the community have also emphasized the importance of consent in how these principles are practiced.

What does participation look like?

Participation can look like a lot of things:

  • attending a meetup
  • creating art
  • hosting a gathering
  • joining a conversation
  • helping build something with others

There’s no single path, just ways to plug in.
